First of all I want to say thank you to Benchmade for supporting this passaround and giving us the chance to test this knife in practical use.

First impression:
The first impression was like :hehe:. I expected a bigger knife, but ok - it's the MINI Barrage. So this was my mistake - I had the wrong prospects. Don't ask me way :). After I took it out of the box I was really happy, that it was not bigger. The size was perfect! . So, it's time to have a closer look ...
Blade:
The blade is made of 154C. Definitely one of my favourite steels. Hard enough to use it as an EDC knife, soft enough sharpening it.
The blade was absolutely sharp out of box. Also the blade shape fits very harmonic to the handle. I used the knife for cutting things in the kitchen (tomatoes, meet, pizza, ...), outdoor (tracking) and during work (opening boxes and cutting polymer films). The blade did every thing more than fine.

Lock:
Until know I thought the AXIS lock is the number one regarding locks. Know I have a new favourite - the AXIS-ASSIST lock !! I love it. Easy to open, easy to close, and very safe with the safety button. A small disadvantage - it does not fit to the German law :-(

Handle:
The handle material is not the premium material Benchmade uses, but it is solid. I do not think, that it will break in normal use. So for an EDC knife absolutely adequate. Also the handle shape and the pattern fits good to my hand shape.

Summary:
A very beautiful knife with the potential to become my favourite EDC knife. Not to big, no aggressive look, "social compatible" for the public. Maybe I will exchange the handle material for something more noble - for example CF ;-)
But nevertheless it is not compatible to the German law. I think that the only minus of this knife.

Sonst: nettes review! :)

It is time to part.
I had a nice time with this neat little folder.

As Ginunting said: it is the MINI-Barrage and it is quite small, indeed. I do not have the biggest hands and while having the knife in a sabre grip it transformed into a three-finger knife.
Those who can cope with that should be happy with this knife. The others can buy its big brother.

The overall design and workmanship leaves nothing to be desired:
The geometry of the blade with its sturdy tip should be suitable for any proper EDC usage.
I did some carving, kitchen work and gutted a few cartons and was fully satisfied.

I do not have any experience with the handle material (Valox) and cannot judge whether it's top-notch or not. All I can say is that the scales fit nicely into one's hand and all the grooves are where they are supposed to be. I would have liked some grooves at the top for a better sabre grip like on the Ares or the 710.

The thumb stud was quite aggressive. After playing with the assisted opening mechanism (it's great, by the way) for a while your thumb may scream „Stop it! At least for a while.“ But this may change due to wear.
The opening mechanism is great and the security lock easy to handle. I usually put it on but do not think the blade would open unexpectedly in your pocket.
Closing the folder one-handedly is not as simple as without the assisted mechanism but after a few tries it worked with ease.

As a lefty I can say it is fully suitable for left-handed people.

Thanks to Benchmade and Ginunting for giving me the opportunity to test this great little folder.

Hier ist mein Testbericht zum Benchmade Mini Barrage:
[english descrption below]

Dom

Here is my review for the Benchmade Mini Barrage:
The knife, unfortunately, came up with a few small micro-bursts with me, after consultation with Tobby, these were quickly sanded out.
The used 154 CM razed well, since for me the usefulness of such a knife is in the outdoor area, I have sanded only up to a 1000 grit, again briefly on a ceramic bar and then deducted on the leather.
The so achieved sharpness then also held the entire test period, even after carving fuzz-sticks of dried pine branches to make fires, underarm shaving was still possible.
The processing of the knife struck me as very good, only when it creates it, you get the blade in spite of the Security Locks increased slightly.
The supporting spring mechanism does his job well, the Axis-lock locks the blade wobble and the additional locking mechanism locks the security there is almost a feeling using a fixed to.
The handle-size I felt (with glove-size 8.5) to be sufficient, people with larger hands might get their problems, especially regarding rough works that require a solid grab.
Speaking of grab: When working without gloves the clip is somewhat uncomfortable, but for the main purpose of the knife (food preparation, chip carving to make fires, etc.) that may no problem…
All in all, the Mini Barrage is a knife I´m fully convinced of, due to the legal situation in Germany it would be only partially used, also the more technical design and support-spring, brought some skeptical glances by people not being used to knives…
Many thanks to Tobby for the possibility to test the Benchmade Mini Barrage,
Best regards,
Dom

First of all 2 things to say : Thanks a lot for this passaround to Benchmade and Ginunting and pardon me for posting after such a long time, but i have had a few hard weeks passed. I crashed my car in a traffic accident and lost it totally:jammer:, so i had to travel with public busses:mad: and railway:mad: to many business and political meetings.
Hoping the new one will arrive in the next 2 weeks.:steirer:

And now a few sentences about the knive. Out of the box it is like Benchmade, perfectly done, well designed and good materials.
It is called "Mini" but it is big enough for daily use and small enough for carrying in any throusers.
I was very interested in using a "assisted opener" for the first time and it is a great fun and pleasure playing with this feature.
It works perfectly well and even when you doesn't engage the the lock in the backside of the handle you are feeling that it is safe.
The axis lock is definitly the best lock for me as a "lefty", working rocksolid and using is the same from both sides.
It is not from the expensive series of BM, but nevertheless the materials used with this knive are even more then good.
154 CM is not a high class steel in this times, but using it like BM it is more than good, really sharp and ,in my normal use, holding the edge.
Length of the blade and thickness is not designed for real hard use, but together with the nice leafshape of the blade it is perfect for EDC.
The handle feels comfortably in my hands, the cut-outs or groovings
are positioned as it is custom-made for me.
The handle material ,i don't know how it is called, i like even more than Noryl that is used with the griptilian or the presidio we tested last PA.
For me it feels more smooth or softer, so i liked it.
The clip is splitted, looks nice and worked well and you can screw him on both sides, thanks a lot to BM from all "lefties".
The pins are Benchmade, well positioned, same look and material then most BM's and on both sides - see above.
Workmenship is really perfect, everything is exactly cut out, finished and screwed together.
At last - i liked it, i used it, i weared it, but i would not buy it- why?
I know it is legal in Germany and i always wear knives in my pocket, even a few one handed, but i won't discuss with any lawman why i wear a one handed knive with a fast opener.
And now- Greetings to everyone here on MF, to Ginunting and the BM guys and best wishes for christmas and many present boxes filled with beautiful knives,
dyas-segler

Hard to say something new. :hmpf:

As Ginunting said:

Can't say it better :D

I think it's nice to see a knife in comparison to some others
img_2116.jpg

And here is one detail I like. (would be nice to see somthing like this on more BMs) The polished steel inlay is great, too, looks noble (Ok, you can't see it in this picture very good but in real it's a big difference to the 710)
img_2117.jpg

The handle material (Valox) is better than I thought before. In my opinion it feels more noble than the FRN from the Spydercos.
I never saw a Griptillian in real, yet, but I like the design and the material of the handle more.

What suprised me was the Clip on the Barrage. Looks like there is a new way of painting them? It toughes strange but comfortable and it seems to be more sturdy.

I can confirm that the knife has a good size for EDC but I prefer bigger knifes like the 710, because cutting biscuit or agitating the coffee when a spoon is missing etc. is more comfortable with a longer blade.

What I don't like is the Assist feature, because closing the blade is possible but a bit too difficult, if you do it with one hand and if you are a bit busy.
I prefer the normal Axxis-Lock, but it was great to play with the knife.
The Assist feature has a strong spring... :haemisch:

All in all the Mini Barrage did not dissappoint me and maybe I buy its big brother some day :super:

Hello, here is my test report:

Benchmade 585 Mini Barrage

Data (according to catalogue):
blade length: 7,4 cm
blade thickness: 2,54 mm
blade height: 2,4 cm
length overall (open): 17,6 cm
weight: 96,3 g
blade steel: 154CM, sabre grind
Lock: AXIS-Assist Lock

First impression
The first impression is positive. As I expected, the workmanship is at high level. Even though the BM 585 carries the name “Mini”-Barrage, it is perfectly suited as an EDC by its dimensions (not too big, not too small).

comp_S1052686.jpg

comp_S1052687.jpg

Handle
The hollows and grooves of the handle are exactly at the place where they are supposed to be. The comfortable prehensile Valox-Scales make the handle pleasant voluminous, so that the knife is to carry securely and conveniently in one’s hand. A little highlight is the contoured backspacer between the polished steel-liners, which valorizes the knife optically.

comp_S1052691.jpg

comp_S1052690.jpg

Blade
The drop-point blade is 7,4 cm long and consists of 154CM-steel, which already convinced me by my BM 705. The blade thickness of 2,54 mm in association with the accurately done sabre grind makes the knife very cut-qualified. The blade height of 2,4 cm provides the knife a leaf-shape, which is absolutely edc-suitable.

Opening mechanism
I was very eager to this assisted opener knife, because so far I only knew the AXIS lock. The spring assisted opening mechanism lets the knife to open very quickly and to lock with a rich “Klack”. Contra to unintentional opening (for example in trouser pocket) the knife offers a safety-button.
As I consider the BM 585 due to his dimensions and his leaf shape as perfect every day carrier, my position to the AXIS-Assist Lock is a split one.
On the one hand it is a nice gadget, on the other hand the lightning-fast opening curtails the every-day-use of the knife, because the opening appears too martial to me. In daily routine at least one knife accompanies me as a tool. And by responsible minded and sincere use of this tool I try to reduce fears and reservations against knives (=weapons) of my society. It seems that I was already successful with my colleagues (“Do you have a knife?”) and they also showed interest in my new toy that I had one week for testing. However I have to agree to my trainee, who mentioned that a knife without “Klack” would suffice for opening packages or making a sandwich.

comp_S1052689.jpg

Lock:
The knife has an AXIS-Lock. Perfect!

Result:
Because of the legal limbo of carrying a knife with an one-hand-function in Germany in general and especially because of the spring assisted opening mechanism the BM 585 is ineligible for me as an EDC.
Nonetheless the BM 585 is a super crafted and stylish designed knife and somehow it makes me sad to dispatch this beautiful knife on its journey again.
Thanks to Benchmade and Tobby for the opportunity to test this knife!

Hallo hier mein Testbericht

Benchmade 585 Mini-Barrage

Daten (laut Katalog):
Klingenlänge: 7,4 cm
Klingenstärke: 2,54 mm
Klingenhöhe: 2,4 cm
Gesamtlänge (offen): 17,6 cm
Gewicht: 96,3 g
Klingenstahl: 154CM, halbhoher Flachschliff
Verschluss: AXIS-Assist Lock

Erster Eindruck

At first I have to thank Benchmade and Ginunting for making this PA possible.

AFAICS there is pretty much everything said in the former posts. Thus I try to focus on my very own impressions. The BM585 is in fact "Mini" but beautiful. And to my surprise this little knife did the trick to fit my hands just perfect.

The real eye-catcher for me is the assisted opening mechanism. It is that much fun to open and close it, actualy I couldn't hold myself back ;). Remember, one has to watch out for german cops while playing this game. I did'nt use the security lock on the back. AFAICS there isn't that much risk of opening the knife unexpectedly.

I've used the BM585 for prepping food, some small carving jobs, opening parcels and much more little tasks this week. Needless to say, all of them were solved pretty well.

To sum up, I'd like to say that the Benchmade 585 Mini Barrage is one of the best EDC-Folders I've ever touched. Being a real fan of SAK's, the BM definitively has the potential for a change-over.

After one week of testing I'm quite convinced of that knife.
What I like is the good grip; it fits perfectly to my hands. The opening spring is not a port of the liner but a separate spring below the handles. The handles themselves are made out of plastics; that fits the price but is a good basis for a selfmade project. The original plastic ones nevertheless are grippy, too.
The spring mechanism is not far from perfect: When opening, there's a good force on the blade without the knife jumping out of your hand. In addition, in both closed and opened position, the blade is lockable. I didn't use that often 'cause the Axis lock is far from not trustfully.
What made me setting it on my list of needed is mainly the blade form. That very long edge makes me replacing my Mini-Ambush with this little plaything.

Hallo,

English:
Hello, my first impression about the knife was: "Something reached me, which I won't give up easily..." :hmpf:
This were confirmed again and again during my testing period.

The reasons for this were the optimal size (for me), the grip, the very nice blade design, my cutting tests and the good processing.

It was very pleasant to use the Axis Lock (here in the assist mode) again. I liked the possibility to lock the knive additionally in a very easy way (one move with a small lever), equal if open or closed. You got a bit more security, without paying for it with wild moves or settings.

The knive was very sharp and solved every challenge with honour.

The opening mechanismus worked perfect. An easy move with the thumb stud and the blade was lifted gently, but determined. A full clicking noise announced: surely engaged.

The handle fits my hand perfectly. How does this work? Nobody was here, checking it out... The handle scales were structured in a way to improve the good grip feeling. The only point to criticize: Why always black plastique? It should also work with a beautyfull wood (stabilized) or a combination of materials.

A sentence to the assisted opener story: Everyone who haven't all the paraqraphes and rules in mind, thinks this is an automated opener. Thats fact. All explanations of the differences appears as niceties. (I see this similar)

My conclusions: A beautyfull tool. And I don't need a "opening assistance".

Thanks for the chance to be part of this passaround.

Regards,
Th.

Hi,

my impressions about the Mini Barrage.

I liked the design, and the Bladeshape very much, the Flat grind is my favorit grind style.

I carried the knife for a few days at work, an it did all tasks like expected only the clip is a tad to strong in my opinion.
But this can be solved when you have your own knife.
I like the Safety Button because it did not need much force to launch the assisted Axis mechanism.

The Mini Barrage was my first assisted opener, and as nice as it is for playing in the first few hours, i did not like it on a EDC.
But this is just my subjective opinion.

As others have mentioned before, the one handed closing of the blade is not that easy, and need some practice.
At work with oily hands it was realy hard, and i needed both hands to get it closed.

The build quality is very well, no gaps, no sharp edges (only the part who is supposed to be sharp :D ), nice blade finish.
I did not like the handle material, i would like to see G10 there instead of the Valox benchmade used .
Conclusion, the Mini Barrage i a nice and well made knife, an without the assisted opening system i would buy it.

Thanks to Benchmade and Ginunting for the passaround.

best regads, Alex
